60
points for attendance and active participation in the class
To receive an “A” or a “B” you must have excellent
attendance and be punctual to class. If you miss more than nine hours
of class time, you will not be able to receive higher than a “C”
for your final grade, regardless of work completed. If you miss more
than fifteen hours of class time, you will not receive a passing grade for
the course, regardless of work completed. As for tardiness, two
instances of coming 10 to 15 minutes late and one instance of more than 20
minutes late to class will be considered as one hour of absence.
Active participation in class means focusing exclusively on journal
work. Sharing your work in some form that is comfortable for you is
also part of participating fully. Honor the classroom guidelines for
behavior. Since we will meet for 30 class sessions over the course of the
semester, attendance and full participation for each day will earn 2 points. Many
instances of producing and sharing our work will be spontaneous and
informal.

70
points for Journaling Updates. While I will not be reading your
journal, you are expected to spend approximately three hours per week on your
journal work outside of class in addition to the time devoted to
reading. You will periodically report on your progress. To assist
in this process, I will ask you to submit a personal plan sheet showing how
you intent to schedule your three hours a week by the second week of
class. This will be the first Journaling Update you will turn in. After
that, approximately every other week, you’ll be turning in a typed,
double-spaced, minimum one full
page Journaling Update, an account of how well you’ve been meeting your
original goals, what sort of writing you’ve been doing and what you
plan to do next to stretch yourself in your journal. I’ll also be looking for a
mention of what you’ve read from your textbook, and a comment about how
you were (or were not) able to apply the ideas in the textbook to your
journaling. These will be
evaluated on how well you’ve honored the 3 writing hours a week
commitment, and on how well developed your comments on your recent journaling
experiences are (with a reference to how you’ve incorporated
information/insights from our text).

30
points possible for your 1st Journal paper
For each of the 3 Journal papers, everyone is extended the “Give me a
Break” option. One assignment may be handed in a week late
without explanations or penalties. Attach a signed and dated note
to your paper making this request.
Assignments submitted via
this option will not have a revision option (as will papers turned in on
time). The due dates for the papers are on the tentative schedule. Your
own thinking should form the center of this piece - it should not simply
regurgitate any part of our discussions. You may get help with your paper
from the Writing Center staff in LA 355.
You will share this paper with a few classmates. Plagiarism (even a
little) with this project will result in a zero for your grade. Each of these
papers will be typed, double-spaced, presented in a regular size font (12
point). This first paper will be a development of piece you’ve begun in
your journal and should be between 2 and 4 pages in length.. It may take the form of an essay,
short story or a polished journal entry: anything based on your journal
writing or reading this semester is allowed. (30pts)

30 points possible for your 2nd Journal
paper
The second paper will be connected to the Self-Selected Book (a list of
suggestions will be given out at the beginning of the term) you have chosen
to read. After you’ve completed reading your Self-Selected book,
you’ll choose a focus for this paper that will be connected, either
tightly or loosely, to the book’s impact on you. You are not being asked to write a book report or review. You are being asked to write a brand
new personal piece of writing, in the spirit of journal keeping.
You will be expected to include quotes and paraphrases
from your Self Selected Book in correct MLA format. Note: this will include
having a Work Cited page. This piece will be typed, double-spaced, presented
in a regular size font and should be between 4 and 6 pages in length. (30pts)

|
30 points possible for your 3rd
Journal paper
This paper should be a piece of new work based on your
journal writing from this semester. Craft a paper that feels truly
worth your time and attention. You will share this paper with a few
classmates. This piece will be typed, double-spaced, presented in a regular
size font and should be between 2 and 4 pages in length. (30pts)

|
30 points possible for your In-Class Paper
on the Textbook
You will also be asked to write an in-class impromptu
paper on the textbook you chose for the course. Reading your text
is a requirement, and you will need to have the book present with you the day
we do the in-class writing in order to be able to refer to it. I urge you to use post its or some
other form of mechanism to keep track of moments in your textbook which
affect you strongly. It would also serve you to have any notes or references
you’ve made to the textbook in your Journaling Updates present with you
in class. While this will be an
‘open book’ assignment, the focus each of you will be asked to
take in your paper will only be announced that day. (30pts)
|
|
30 points possible for your Final Project
This is a self-designed assignment, subject to instructor
approval. I will be assisting each student in designing a final
project. This will be due before end of the term. (30pts)
|
|
20 points
possible for your Final Presentation to the class
Each of you will present either a piece which developed from your
journaling work this term you may generate a work (poem, song, play, dance,
film, quilt, artwork), or lead the group through a creative journaling
exercise that you have developed. Each student will have between 5 to 10
minutes to present and guidelines for the content will be offered. Your work
may be analytic, informal, creative, critical, visual or artistic. You may
include any sort of media you think appropriate. The focus will be on
what you learn from and about the piece, and how it connects for you with the
work we've covered in class. Each
presentation will need to include a handout. I urge you to consider an
informal creative design for this assignment. (20)
